Joe Launches His Campaign
I’m Joe Burgett, and I’m running for the South Carolina State House. Learn why and what are some of the pillars of my campaign here.
Why I'm Running
My name is Joe Burgett, and I'm running for the South Carolina State House of Representatives in the Clemson, Central and Six Mile area. Please take a look at this video to learn more about me and why I'm running for office.
Clemson is Home
Like many of you, I was not born here, but Clemson became home. Thirteen years ago my wife and I moved here with three babies so I could work at Clemson University.

Our children grew up in local schools, were baptized at Alive Wesleyan, and this community shaped our lives. We have served, fostered children, built friendships, and built our family here. Clemson is home!
Government That Works
My campaign slogan is “Road, Schools, and Government that Works.” So what does “Government that Works” really mean?
First—government should actually work. Like a reliable car, it should do what it’s supposed to do.
Second—it means your representative works. Shows up prepared. Understands the issues. Communicates with you.
Start Using Temp Bridges in SC
What if we replace our bridges without shutting down your life? Right now, the typical approach is simple: shut it down… and send you on a months-long detour.  But it doesn’t have to be that way. Other states are already doing it better. In Florida, they use temporary bridges — built like erector sets — so traffic keeps moving while construction gets done.
Why Do we Have a Bridge Problem in the Upstate?
In the 1960s, we built a boatload of timber pile bridges across the Upstate. They went in fast and cheap, but they have a 60-year lifespan, and they are all starting to age out.  Instead of fixing the problem head-on, we’re patching them with temporary fixes. That might buy us time, but it doesn’t buy us safety.
Gas Tax Explained
I’m standing at the gas pump trying to break down where your gas tax actually goes. We pay 28.75 cents per gallon; however, not all the gas taxes go to roads! Let’s see if I can do it before the pump clicks off!
Warning Signs Ignored: The Bridge Problem We Can’t Afford
This is what happens when maintenance gets ignored. Water is bypassing the rip rap and eroding the soil that supports this bridge. It’s reaching the timber pile caps, where long-term water exposure leads to rot and structural damage. Bridges don’t fail overnight. They fail when warning signs are ignored.
